Maybe I'm too much of a male Chauvinist, but I was never very interested in the various Lilith Fairs. However, for some reason I picked up this CD (at the library - OK I'm cheap) and gave it a listen. It's really quite good overall, albeit a bit uneven. I've listened to it for a while now and it wears quite well.
The Editorial Review above says "Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work" and that's certainly true for Joan Osborne. Her "Ladder" is definitely one of the best live performances I've ever heard. She's a great singer and she had a helluva band backing her up that day. (BTW, one of the other great live songs is "Naked Eye" by Luscious Jackson on Lilith vol. 3.)
Other particularly good songs on this CD are: "Sur Tes Pas" - Autour De Lucie; "I Want" - Dayna Manning; "Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner" - September 67; "Cain" - Patty Griffin; "I Don't Want To Think About It" - Wild Strawberries. I hadn't heard anything by any of these artists before, so I consider this quite a find.
In sum, a nice double CD with a nice range of unique works.
This uneven production was recorded live in 1997, in a show organized in the bossa revival wave which took place in Rio in the late 90's. The industry's tentacles show under the opportunistic choice of successful artists in other areas to perform together with consecrated bossa idols. Pery Ribeiro, Johnny Alf, Marcos Valle, Wanda Sá, Zé Renato, Leny Andrade, Emílio Santiago, Sílvio César, Wilson Simonal, Os Cariocas, Ithamara Koorax, Nana Caymmi, Alaíde Costa, Joyce, Zimbo Trio, Márcio Montarroyos, Quarteto em Cy, Claudette Soares, Tito Madi, Cláudia Telles and Dóris Monteiro are wonderful artists who could take this enterprise without any other help than the precious band composed by César Camargo Mariano, Romero Lubambo, Nico Assumpção and Téo Lima. But Rosana, Erasmo Carlos, Fafá de Belém, Patrícia Marx, Elba Ramalho, Sandra Sá, Frejat, Guilherme Arantes and Léo Jaime are dispensable in this repertory, ranging from the innocuous to the frankly obstructive, as in Rosana's yelling rendition for the delicate "Você," where she even got in the way of Lubambo's solo (and he responds with a cascade of notes declaring war to the privacy invasion).

As one should infer from the title alone, this album should not be listened
to by the easily offended.
This is as raunchy as humor gets!
The Rodeo Song and The Dirty Polka are both guilty pleasures, and Wet Dreams,
with all its shameless punning, is sure to make you cringe. Bl-- Me,
You Hardly Even Know Me is cheap comedy done with style, but the best song on
this is The I-95 Song, to which pretty much anybody should be able to relate.
Again, none of this is for the squeemish, and anybody looking for intelligent
comedy should look somewhere else, but if you're the type who enjoys cheap
laughs and sick jokes, you can't go wrong with this.

Various Artists Blues With A Message (blues)(mp3@320)[rogercc]
[b]Various Artists Blues With A Message
Label : Arhoolie

Blues With a Message isn't just about lost love and the toils of specific lives, the blues (particularly within the folk-blues traditions) spent some time dealing with sociopolitical issues on the side, primarily before the rise of electric blues. Here, Arhoolie has compiled a set of pieces related to a surprisingly large number of issues. Among them: Minstrel shows, the mechanization of cotton farming, and its related exodus to the North, sharecropping, segregation, the Korean War, the influenza epidemic, the New Deal, civil rights movements, Chicago employment opportunities -- all are given a song or two here. The music quality is roughly equivalent to many of the folk-blues recordings available, though the "big name" artists are largely absent from this one (Lightnin Hopkins does make an appearance singing about sharecropping, however). The songs are deliberately focused on the issues more than the music, but the music can still carry its soul. This one probably won't be on many highest-sales lists in the blues, but it's both historically important and musically enjoyable.

I Am Sam - Soundtrack 320cbr (Big Papi) 2002 The Beatles Cover Songs by Various Artists
Source: 2002 CD
[image=ybnGvhPe7d]
By D. Movahedpour
This is one of the best albums of Beatle cover versions I have ever heard, but several of the songs on the album are also the worst I've ever heard. The gems make up for the failures, however. I have never heard a better version of 'Across the Universe', outside of the Beatles original, than the version by the very-talented Rufus Wainwright. Eddie Vedder sings a soulful and unforgettable version of 'You've Got to Hide Your Love Away'. Ben Harper's cover of 'Strawberry Fields Forever' is absolutely beautiful. The husband and wife team of Aimee Mann and Michael Penn bring a fresh charm to 'Two of Us'. Ben Folds' 'Golden Slumbers' is memorable, and Sarah McLachlan is a fine choice for 'Blackbird'.
The first three quarters of this album are fantastic, but there are three versions I find downright unlistenable. Chocolate Genius completely destroys the soul and spirit of 'Julia'. And, although John Lennon originally wanted 'Revolution' to be a slow song, the version by Grandaddy completely misses the point. Nick Cave's version of Let It Be, which finishes off the album, completely spoils the song.
Every other song on the album is either very good or pretty close to a gem. I choose to skip the three songs I couldn't bear to listen to, and enjoy the album for its good points.
Various Artists - Fascinatin' Rhythm (Capitol Sings George Gersh
Fascinatin' Rhythm: Capitol Sings Gershwin is a very enjoyable sampler, featuring a generous selection of Capitol recording artists singing many of the best items in George Gershwin's catalog.
Every featured artist more or less fits into the "traditional pop vocal" category, but there's enough variety in their vocals and arrangements to make this a varied, consistently entertaining listen. (AMG)
"Fascinatin' Rhythm," the Capitol Sings collection of George Gershwin tunes, begins with Freddy Martin and his Orchestra doing a version of "Rhapsody in Blue" to which you can swing your partner around the dance floor, perfectly capturing the charm of this series.
Here are your favorite songs by our greatest composers often done in different ways from what you usually expect. But changing music style or tempo, adding percussions or strings, are what make these songs so enjoyable.
Dorothy Donegan's "A Foggy Day" is a particularly jazzy version, but then Margaret Whiting's "But Not For Me" is big band style while Ann Richards does a very slow and sultry cover of "I Got Rhythm" (at least at the start). Sometimes the twist is that someone like Gordon MacRae sings "Summertime," a song he would certainly never get to do on stage in "Porgy & Bess" for a couple of rather obvious reasons.
Like all the albums in this series, "Fascinatin' Rhythm" combines covers by big stars like Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Tony Bennett and Peggy Lee with lesser known artists such as Keely Smith, Jo Ann Greer, Dakota Staton and Marian McPartland (I guess I would have to put Anna Marie Alberghetti in the middle on this one). My favorite track on this album would be Judy Garland's live version of "Swanee," but "They Can't Take That Away From Me" is certainly one of Peggy Lee's best efforts.
"Fascinatin' Rhythm" may be well be the most female artist dominated disc in the Capitol Sings collection, which for my money only adds to its enjoyment. (Customer from Amazon)
